Coronavirus, a.k.a. Covid-19, has stomped the world with fear and mayhem. People are losing their lives, with a mortality rate of 2-3% of the total infected. It looks a small figure, but it’s a fatal disease as clearly stated by the “World Health Organization” as the world health emergency or a global pandemic.
The world economies are crippling, and countless businesses are affected with trillion of losses in total. Many jobs require the presence of the person on-site; hence, massive layoffs are happening, and the scenario is getting worse. One of the reasons is people are still unable to understand the alarming situation and are not taking enough precautions to avoid getting infected by coronavirus/COVID-19.
Previously, it was called a 2019 novel Coronavirus. WHO officially announced the name for the disease as COVID-19 or coronavirus.
- Disease – Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)
- Virus – Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
Do you know? Viruses and diseases have different names.
For example, AIDS is a disease that most people know; even they know the name of HIV. However, a huge proportion of people don’t think HIV is a virus and AIDS is a disease that occurs due to HIV infection in the body.
One more: measles is a disease, and the virus’s name is rubeola.
Naming them differently has a purpose.
Viruses are named after seeing their genetic structure, and diseases are named after their spread, transmissibility, severity, and prevention.
On February 11, 2020, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)/ WHO announced SARS-CoV-2 as the new virus after a thorough study.
NOTE: SARS and SARS-CoV-2 are two different viruses, and their disease has a common name, coronavirus.
What is Coronavirus?
According to WHO, “Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that range from the common cold to MERS coronavirus, which is Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus and SARs, Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus.”
What is the source of Coronavirus?
Studies have shown that coronaviruses come from infected animals (usually bats) when someone consumes them. Coronaviruses can transmit from animals to humans, which is why they are considered deadly and have alarmed governments worldwide.
How Fatal Coronavirus or COVID-19 is?
It’s highly contagious and can kill a huge amount of people or wipe out an unthinkable number of humans on planet Earth if the spread is not stopped. Transmittable viruses are nothing new to the world: rhinoviruses, noroviruses, and influenza are all highly contagious, and humans have survived them, and we will survive this pandemic, too.
It’s also Asymptomatic.
COVID-19 doesn’t show signs in the initial stages, which is why the world is quarantined for 14 days. In most cases, people who died and who had mild coronavirus infection showed symptoms of being infected after 14 days, making it a fatal disease. Many countries, such as Italy and the US, showed leniency and kept their borders open until it was too late.
Many scientists and researchers are baffled by the novel because they are uncertain what strain they are dealing with and what to treat. This is why medicine is taking too long to develop. We are dealing with the invisible enemy that is one step ahead of the most brilliant minds in the medical field and is outpacing the smartest people and the mightiest of the authorities.
The worst thing is, it gets from bad to rose and then to the worst real quick, leaving hardly any chance for the host to survive. According to the infected people, who have recovered from the distress of severe respiratory distress, “it’s like breathing a broken glass.”
The magnitude of the Death Rate is Deadly High
When it gets severe, it’s almost out of the hands of scientists and doctors who actively work tirelessly to save people from the invisible monster claiming the lives of many every passing day. Sadly, many countries are equipped with great medical care, and the virus can be deadly if left untreated. Even Italy, which has the second-best health care in the world, is failing to stop it.
How did Italy fall to Coronavirus?
It all started with two Chinese tourists visiting Italy, and the rest is the story. The picture might be clear in your mind how fatal this virus can be and how quickly it spreads.
Actual Number of Coronavirus Can Differ
A lot of countries at the initial stage didn’t do a screening of the tourists coming to their airports, and they did not clear the immigration check without any mandatory screening. It wouldn’t be wrong if the infected cases could be more than the confirmed ones. WHO is giving Live figures of the confirmed cases with every clock tick. This is why people are being home-locked, and the world is put on lockdown till the 31st of March. It’s hoped that till then, people who currently have the virus will show signs, and the government can isolate them from the rest to stop the spread.
Many People will be Infected
A scary fact, yet the truth. Millions will get it even if all the measures are taken, including the lockdown for a few weeks or months. Even if we consider only a 0.5% mortality rate of the total world population, millions are going to die before it all ends. This is all because we still have no idea how many people are infected and are transmitting without even being aware.
Can People get Re-infect?
There’s no concrete answer. Researchers and doctors are still clueless. Only time will tell what will result. Some are saying severe lung infection, even after cure, can last for years or even for a lifetime. Some might get common flu the following year, but as we progress, things are getting a wee bit clearer.
To be continued.
