Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 3 Test 1 General Writing Task 2

It is argued that minors’ free-time activities should solely focus on education, or else this is a meaningless use of their time. I completely disagree with this statement because playing games can teach children vital social skills and boost their cognitive ability.

The main reason I strongly believe juveniles should spend their free time playing games rather than learning is because it aids in social development. In other words, when children play games with their friends, they can learn cooperation, leadership and teamwork because they must respect other people’s opinions, pool their strengths to get the best possible results and learn conflict resolution. These skills are of the utmost importance as they will need them throughout their lives. Many famous football and cricket players, for example, said that participation in team sports during their childhood helped them immensely in their careers.

Another reason to consider is that it may enhance their intellect. That is to say that if a child is allowed to play games and that too, without any help, they will often need to use their brain power to play games since most games require different strategies and, sometimes, perseverance to complete certain levels. If a child is not successful in clearing any stage at the first attempt, they will try again using a different approach until they are successful, and to do this, they would need to use various parts of their brain, such as concentration and memory. As a result, it will help them to increase their intellectual power. For instance, children who play chess, a board game, usually score more marks in Mathematics and Science than their counterparts.

In conclusion, I totally disagree that children should spend their spare time on educational activities only because playing fun games can make them more friendly and increase their intelligence.
