IELTS vs. IELTS UKVI: What’s the Difference?

When planning to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), you might come across two versions: IELTS and IELTS UKVI.

Many agents and visa consultancies tell you to go for either, and sometimes,  they are confused about the proper test, especially when you are going to the UK.

Remember…

Both tests evaluate your English language proficiency for study, work, or migration but differ in purpose and application. This guide will help you understand the key differences and decide which test suits your needs.

What is IELTS?

The standard IELTS assesses your English skills in four areas: Listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It is widely accepted by universities, employers, and immigration authorities worldwide.

More than 12,500 educational institutions, including all the Ivy League schools, accept IELTS. Nonetheless, unlike other exams, IELTS is still controlled by humans, making it fairer than its rivals.

When students take the IELTS exam, they not only develop their actual English language skills but also see a massive improvement in their personality, which helps them to be successful in the West.

Who should take IELTS?

  • Students applying to universities or colleges, including in the UK.
  • Professionals seeking work opportunities in English-speaking countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the USA.
  • Immigrants moving to countries that require proof of English proficiency.

What is IELTS UKVI?

IELTS UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is designed for people applying for a UK visa. It is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by the UK Home Office. The test content is the same as the regular IELTS but follows stricter security protocols to meet UK government requirements.

Who should take IELTS UKVI?

  • Students applying to UK universities require IELTS UKVI Academic.
  • Skilled workers applying for work visas under the UK Skilled Worker route.
  • Family members joining someone in the UK (family visas).
  • Permanent residents applying for settlement or citizenship (if required).

Remember, the IELTS and IELTS UKVI exams are the same. This means the format of IELTS AC and IELTS FOR UKVI AC and IELTS GT and IELTS for UKVI GT are the same.

Types of IELTS and IELTS UKVI

Both IELTS and IELTS UKVI offer two formats: Academic and General Training.

1. Academic

  • Who is it for?
    • Students applying for undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional registration.
  • Example: If you’re applying to study at the University of Oxford in the UK, you’ll need IELTS UKVI Academic. The standard IELTS Academic is enough for other countries like Australia or Canada. However, it’s better to read the university’s guidelines regarding their IELTS acceptance. Most UK universities accept IELTS AC as well.
  • Some UK work visa programs also accept the IELTS for UKVI AC.

2. General Training

  • Who is it for?
    • Individuals migrating for work or training programs.
    • People apply for permanent residency in Canada, New Zealand, or Australia.
  • Example: If you’re migrating to the UK under the Skilled Worker visa route, you’ll need IELTS UKVI General Training. You’ll take the standard IELTS General Training for Canada’s Express Entry program. However, read the visa requirements before booking the test. They are listed on the official UK immigration website.

Which Test Should You Take?

For Studying Abroad:

  • If you’re applying to the UK, check if the university requires IELTS UKVI Academic.
  • For universities in other countries, the standard IELTS Academic is sufficient.

For Work or Migration:

  • Moving to the UK? Take IELTS UKVI General Training for visa purposes.
  • Moving to Canada, Australia, or New Zealand? Standard IELTS General Training will work.

For Family or Settlement in the UK:

  • You may need IELTS UKVI Life Skills or General Training, depending on visa requirements.

Cost and Availability

The test fees for IELTS UKVI are slightly higher due to additional security measures. Availability may also vary since IELTS UKVI can only be taken at UKVI-approved test centres.

Key Takeaway

  • Take IELTS if you’re not applying for a UK visa.
  • Choose IELTS UKVI if your visa application requires it.

Always double-check the English language requirements with your institution, employer, or immigration authority to avoid confusion.
