Famous Failure – Elizabeth Arden

Born on 31 December 1878 in Woodbridge, Vaughan, Canada, Florence Nightingale Graham, a.k.a. Elizabeth Arden, made a huge dent in the cosmetic industry with her great entrepreneurial skills. She was a business mogul who, with her sheer business skills, created a humongous cosmetic empire.

By 1929, she had 150 salons across the US and Europe, eventually selling 1000 products in more than 22 countries.

I only want people around me who can do the impossible.

During her stint as a businesswoman, she was listed as one of the wealthiest women in the world. However, her rags-to-riches story was no bed of roses. She had experienced failure before doing great work in life.

In 1909, when Florence was 31 years old, she formed a business partnership with Elizabeth Hubbard, but their stint lasted only six months. The following year, at the age of 32, she took the business reins in her hands and named herself Elizabeth Arden. She wanted to save money on a sign for her salon, and Arden’s name she lifted from the name of a nearby farm.

Repetition makes reputation and reputation makes customers.

Arden inaugurated Red Door Salon in New York City in the same year. To learn beauty and facial techniques, Arden travelled to France, and after coming to America, she partnered with a chemist to create diversified products to cater to beauty needs. Her efforts transformed the beauty products industry and reached beyond the upper classes of society.

Elizabeth Arden’s annual revenue is around $1 billion, and it is now a wholly subsidiary of Revlon, Inc. Many Hollywood A-list stars, such as Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, Elizabeth Taylor, Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, and Taylor Swift, use Arden to launch their perfume or beauty products collections.

Hold fast to youth and beauty.
