Famous Failure – Charles Darwin

Born on 12 February 1809 in The Mount House, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom, Charles Darwin was considered a major failure. Even his father had the same thoughts about him.

Due to his deep interest in the mysteries of nature, Darwin always neglected his medical studies at the University of Edinburgh, dropping his school in 1827. His father was deeply disappointed and annoyed over his behaviour and remarked, “You care for nothing but shooting, dogs and rat-catching.”

A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.

Following the winter semester, he tried again in studies for the second time by enrolling in Christ’s College at the University of Cambridge. But like all other legends who had rewritten the future of mankind, Darwin was destined for something big. In 1831, as usual, he didn’t find his calling in his studies and dropped out of school for the second time.

Darwin was well aware of his father’s and all his teachers’ disappointment and disbelief in him. In his autobiography, he even remarked that he was considered below the very common standard of intellect.

These remarks never stopped Darwin when they came from his father and teachers. Instead, he listened to his calling and his love to solve the puzzles of nature.

Darwin is among the most brilliant scientific minds to have walked the earth. His works on natural selection helped science understand the interconnection of species and what evolves them.

Darwin helped us understand our origins, what links us with nature, how DNA is behind evolution, and the most important link in the evolution of heredity.

I have steadily endeavoured to keep my mind free so as to give up any hypothesis, however much beloved (and I cannot resist forming one on every subject), as soon as facts are shown to be opposed to it.

Even Julian Huxley, the first Director of UNESCO and a founding member of the World Wildlife Fund, stated about Darwin, “Darwin’s idea is the most powerful and most comprehensive idea that has ever arisen on earth. It helps us understand our origins…We are part of a total process, made of the same matter and operating by the same energy as the rest of the cosmos, maintaining and reproducing by the same mechanism on the rest of life.”
