TEF Canada Exam Pattern, Scoring & Online Coaching (NCLC 7 Prep)

CCIP Paris • IRCC Approved Benchmark

The Test d’Évaluation de Français pour le Canada (TEF Canada) is the designated French language assessment administered by the Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI Paris Île-de-France) for Canadian immigration and citizenship.

Achieving an NCLC 7 (Level B2) in all 4 mandatory modules unlocks up to +50 additional CRS points in Express Entry and qualifies you for dedicated French category-based draws with cut-offs frequently under 420. Whether you are taking TEF Canada for the first time or retaking after missing an individual band, Voxcel and Polyvox French Language Lab provide personalized 1-on-1 online coaching to secure your target score.

Official TEF Canada Exam Format

While general TEF variants (like TEF Études or TEF Naturalisation) offer modular options, TEF Canada mandates all 4 modules for Canadian immigration. The examination is structured as follows:

🎧 Listening (Compréhension Orale)

40 Mins
40 Questions • Scale: 0–360 (or /699)

Multiple-choice questions based on short audio passages, public announcements, and real-life conversations. Audio clips play once only with forward-only progression.

📖 Reading (Compréhension Écrite)

60 Mins
40 Questions • Scale: 0–300 (or /699)

Multiple-choice questions evaluating practical document comprehension, news reports, and logical reasoning. You can navigate back and forth between questions.

✍️ Writing (Expression Écrite)

60 Mins
2 Tasks • Scale: 0–450 (or /699)

Section A: Continue a newspaper article/fait divers (min. 80 words • ~25 mins).
Section B: Write a letter to an editor presenting a persuasive argument (min. 200 words • ~35 mins).

🗣️ Speaking (Expression Orale)

15 Mins
2 Tasks • Scale: 0–450 (or /699)

Section A: Role-play asking questions for information based on a prompt (5 mins).
Section B: Role-play persuading a hesitant friend or contact to accept your proposal (10 mins).

Important Notice: Reading Your TEF Canada Results for Express Entry

Your official TEF Canada attestation displays two sets of numbers: the modern Score / 699 and the Équivalence Ancien Score (historical scale). For Express Entry and IRCC PR applications, IRCC calculates your points based on the Équivalence Ancien Score column: Listening (out of 360), Reading (out of 300), Writing (out of 450), and Speaking (out of 450). Entering the raw 699 score into the Express Entry portal will result in an inaccurate NCLC calculation.

TEF Canada Scoring & NCLC Equivalence Chart

To claim the maximum +50 CRS points under Express Entry, candidates must score at least NCLC 7 across all four skills. The table below outlines the official IRCC thresholds:

NCLC / CLB Level Listening (/360) Reading (/300) Writing (/450) Speaking (/450) CEFR Level
NCLC 10 316–360 263–300 393–450 393–450 C2
NCLC 9 298–315 248–262 371–392 371–392 C1
NCLC 8 280–297 233–247 349–370 349–370 B2 (High)
★ NCLC 7 (Target for +50 CRS Points) 249–279 207–232 310–348 310–348 B2 (Solid)
NCLC 6 217–248 181–206 271–309 271–309 B1 (High)
NCLC 5 181–216 151–180 226–270 226–270 B1 (Mid)
NCLC 4 145–180 121–150 181–225 181–225 A2

Important: IRCC does not average section scores. If you achieve NCLC 8 in Reading, Listening, and Speaking, but score 305 in Writing (NCLC 6), your profile will only receive NCLC 6 points. You must reach the NCLC 7 threshold in every individual module.
