Official TCF Canada Exam Format

Unlike the standard TCF Tout Public (which has optional modules), TCF Canada requires all 4 modules for Canadian immigration and Express Entry compliance. The complete test takes 2 hours and 47 minutes:

🎧 Listening (Compréhension Orale)

35 Mins
39 Multiple-Choice Questions • 0–699 Scale

Evaluates spoken French comprehension across daily conversations, radio announcements, and work interviews. Audio is played only once with progressive difficulty.

📖 Reading (Compréhension Écrite)

60 Mins
39 Multiple-Choice Questions • 0–699 Scale

Assesses factual comprehension, text scanning, and analytical interpretation of administrative notices, workplace correspondence, and editorial essays.

✍️ Writing (Expression Écrite)

60 Mins
3 Tasks • 0–20 Scale

Task 1: Short message or email (60–120 words).
Task 2: Letter or report detailing an experience (120–150 words).
Task 3: Comparative opinion essay analyzing two viewpoints (120–180 words).

🗣️ Speaking (Expression Orale)

12 Mins
3 Tasks • 0–20 Scale

Task 1: Guided interview without preparation (2 mins).
Task 2: Everyday interactive query with 2 min prep (5.5 mins).
Task 3: Spontaneous persuasive monologue on a chosen topic (4.5 mins).

TCF Canada Scoring & NCLC Equivalence Chart

TCF Canada uses two distinct reporting scales: Listening and Reading run on a 0–699 difficulty scale (computer-scored), while Writing and Speaking run on a 0–20 scale (human-evaluated by two accredited assessors). IRCC evaluates each skill independently—scores are never averaged.

NCLC / CLB Level Listening (/699) Reading (/699) Writing (/20) Speaking (/20) CEFR Level
NCLC 10 549–699 549–699 16–20 16–20 C2
NCLC 9 523–548 524–548 14–15 14–15 C1
NCLC 8 503–522 499–523 12–13 12–13 B2 (High)
★ NCLC 7 (Express Entry Target) 458–502 453–498 10–11 10–11 B2 (Solid)
NCLC 6 398–457 406–452 7–9 7–9 B1 (High)
NCLC 5 369–397 375–405 6 6 B1 (Mid)
NCLC 4 331–368 342–374 4–5 4–5 A2

Crucial IRCC Rule: To claim the +50 CRS points under the French category or qualify for French-targeted draws, you must achieve at least NCLC 7 in all four abilities. If your speaking is 10 (NCLC 7) but writing is 9 (NCLC 6), you cannot claim the 50 bonus points.
