Canada Super Visa Checklist: Parents & Grandparents Document Guide
The Canada Super Visa is a dedicated multi-entry visitor visa that allows biological or legally adopted parents and grandparents of Canadian Permanent Residents and Citizens to stay in Canada with their family for up to 5 consecutive years per visit.
Unlike standard visitor visas, the Super Visa eliminates the constant disruption of having to exit Canada every 6 months. However, because it carries legally mandated sponsor income thresholds (LICO), strict healthcare insurance mandates, and upfront medicals, careful file preparation is essential to prevent costly refusals.
Authorized Stay: Up to 5 Years Per Entry (Expandable to 7 Years)
Holders of a valid Super Visa can remain in Canada for up to 5 continuous years on their initial entry without needing to renew their status or exit the country. While inside Canada, parents can apply for an extension of up to 2 additional years—enabling a total continuous stay of up to 7 years. The visa itself is granted as a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 10 years (or until passport expiry).
Super Visa vs. Standard Visitor Visa: How Do They Differ?
• Eligibility: The Super Visa is restricted exclusively to biological or legally adopted parents and grandparents of Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents. Siblings, aunts, uncles, or in-laws cannot apply under this stream.
• Length of Stay: Standard visitor visas permit a maximum of 6 months per entry. The Super Visa allows up to 5 continuous years per entry.
• Sponsor Income Requirement: Standard visitor visas have no fixed legal income threshold for hosts. The Super Visa legally requires the Canadian child/grandchild to prove their household meets or exceeds the federal Minimum Necessary Income (LICO).
• Insurance: Standard visitor visas do not legally mandate medical insurance before filing (though recommended). For a Super Visa, purchasing an approved 1-year emergency health insurance policy is mandatory before lodging the application.
Legal Clarity: What If Parents Don’t Have a Marriage Certificate or Spouse Name in Passports?
In India (especially in Punjab), older generations frequently do not possess a formal registered Marriage Certificate. Furthermore, many parents’ passports do not have each other’s names endorsed on the last page. This does not disqualify them from applying for a Super Visa together or individually.
• Under Indian Law (Passport Rules, 1980): There is no legal mandate forcing married citizens to endorse their spouse’s name on their passport. The passport remains an entirely valid, legal travel document without it.
• Under Canadian Immigration Law (IRPA / IRPR): Visa officers evaluate civil partnerships on the balance of probabilities using secondary evidence when a primary certificate does not exist.
Approved Alternative Relationship Evidence to Prove Their Marriage:
1. Joint Bank Account Passbook (Critical Formatting): The front bio page of the physical bank passbook must feature joint photographs of both parents, signed and officially stamped across the photo by the bank branch manager.
2. Children’s Official Documents: The Canadian host’s (child’s) official 10th-grade matriculation certificate, birth certificate, or old school-leaving certificate displaying both father’s and mother’s names together.
3. National Identity Documentation: Identity cards showing the same residential address, joint voter cards, or government ration cards naming both husband and wife.
4. Notarized Joint Marriage Affidavit: A formal legal affidavit executed before an Executive Magistrate / Notary Public affirming their date of marriage, place of ceremony, and continuous cohabitation as husband and wife.
How to Calculate LICO Family Size & Line 15000 Income
Your child or grandchild living in Canada must prove their total household income meets or exceeds the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) threshold for their complete family size.
How to Calculate Your Total Household Size:
Example: If the host in Canada is married and has 1 child, and is now inviting both parents (mother + father) on a Super Visa:
Host (1) + Host’s Spouse (1) + Host’s Child (1) + Father (1) + Mother (1) = Total Family Size of 5 Persons.
Looking at the official table below, the host’s household must show an annual income of at least CAD $64,336.
Adding a Co-Signer: If the primary sponsor’s individual income falls below the required threshold, they can add their spouse or common-law partner as a co-signer if the spouse is working in Canada. Their combined incomes (Line 15000) will be added together to meet the LICO benchmark. (Siblings or other family members cannot co-sign).
How IRCC Evaluates Income & What Deductions Count:
IRCC determines your income using Line 15000 (Total Income) of your CRA Notice of Assessment (NOA). Standard employment tax deductions (CPP, EI, income tax) are not subtracted from Line 15000. However, IRCC legally excludes social assistance and non-taxable welfare benefits:
• Subtracted/Excluded: Provincial social assistance, regular Employment Insurance (EI) earnings, and universal child care benefits.
• Included/Counted: Base salaries, bonuses, self-employment net earnings, and EI special benefits (such as maternity and parental leave).
| Family Size (Host + Dependents + Visiting Parents) | Minimum Necessary Annual Income (CAD LICO) |
|---|---|
| 1 Person (Single Host sponsoring 0 additional guests) | $30,526 |
| 2 Persons (Single Host + 1 Parent) | $38,002 |
| 3 Persons (e.g., Host + Spouse + 1 Parent, OR Host + 2 Parents) | $46,720 |
| 4 Persons (e.g., Host + Spouse + 1 Child + 1 Parent) | $56,724 |
| ★ 5 Persons (e.g., Host + Spouse + 1 Child + 2 Parents) | $64,336 |
| 6 Persons (e.g., Host + Spouse + 2 Children + 2 Parents) | $72,560 |
| 7 Persons | $80,784 |
| Each Additional Family Member beyond 7 | + $8,224 |
Save Upfront Cash: Monthly Installment Payment Plans for Super Visa Insurance
IRCC requires every Super Visa applicant to have private emergency medical insurance providing a minimum of CAD $100,000 in coverage for health care, hospitalization, and repatriation, valid for at least 365 days from the date of arrival in Canada.
Pay via Monthly Installments: You do not need to pay the entire full-year premium upfront! IRCC officially accepts Super Visa medical insurance purchased under monthly installment payment plans.
• How it works: You pay an initial deposit (typically 2 to 3 months of premium deposit plus a nominal administrative setup fee) to activate the policy.
• Filing Proof: The Canadian insurance provider issues an official Confirmation of Insurance Certificate and payment schedule confirming full 365-day emergency coverage. This certificate is uploaded with your visa file.
• Remaining Balance: The remaining monthly installments are automatically debited from your Canadian credit card or bank account only after your parents land in Canada. If the visa is refused, the initial deposit is refunded (minus policy fees) upon presenting the refusal letter.
⚠️ Mandatory Port of Entry Rule: Parents must travel with a printed copy of their valid insurance policy and payment confirmation. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the airport verify active medical coverage upon arrival. If parents attempt to enter without valid insurance, border officers may refuse entry or admit them only as standard 6-month visitors.

Understanding How to Submit Your File Digitally
Super Visa applications are lodged through either the traditional GCKey portal or the newer IRCC Portal. Understanding the technical mechanics prevents upload delays:
1. GCKey (IRCC Secure Account)
The standard Government of Canada credential portal.
- Requires Downloadable IMM Forms: You must download, complete in Adobe Reader, validate (generate 2D barcodes), and upload official forms such as
IMM 5257(Application for Visitor Visa) andIMM 5645(Family Information). - Fixed Category Slots: Financial, medical insurance, and host proof documents must be compiled and compressed into designated single PDF slots (max 4 MB each).
2. New IRCC Portal (Form-Free Interface)
The newer, streamlined browser application system.
- No Downloadable IMM Forms Needed: You answer questions step-by-step through a digital questionnaire. The system generates background documentation automatically.
- Direct Insurance & LICO Uploads: Generates separate, dedicated upload slots for medical insurance policies, host tax assessments, and parent-child relationship certificates.
