The Power of Struggles: A Short Motivational Story on Growth

This Short motivational story in English will help you reflect on your life’s decisions and think from a new perspective. Often, we want everything instantly and give more than needed for quicker results; however, this only leads to frustration and longer wait for the desired outcome we wish for.

Story…

Two people, a retired person and an engineer, lived in two independent houses separated by a compound.

They had planted identical saplings on either side of the compound.

The engineer used to give out water and manure to the plants. The retired, just a small quantity of water and little manure.

The engineer’s plant grew into a lush green, leafy, robust plant.

The retired person’s plant was near normal but much more luxuriant than his neighbour’s.

One night, there was heavy rain with gusty wind. The next morning, both came out to see the fate of the plants.

To the engineer’s surprise, his plant had gotten uprooted while his neighbor’s was unharmed. The engineer asked the retired why his plant was uprooted despite such good care, while the neighbour had hardly cared.

The retired person’s answer should be a lesson for all of us. “Look, young man, you had supplied everything a plant would need in abundance, and the plant did not have to search for it.

Your roots did not have to go down. I was supplying just enough to keep it alive. For the rest, roots had to go down into the ground to fulfil its needs. Since your roots were superficial, rain and wind could easily fall on them. Since my roots were deeply grounded, they could withstand the onslaught of nature.”

The same applies to children, too. As parents, teachers, or guardians, we need to teach them the power of resilience and growth so they don’t get too carried away with the ideas that society tells them.
