Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 7 Test 2 General Writing Task 2

It is argued by some that people who work in the entertainment industry, such as movies, music, and sports, are paid an exorbitant amount of money. I disagree with this stance because they generate much revenue in return. Other professions besides entertainers that should be well-paid are engineers, and doctors and nurses.

The primary reason I believe that entertainers do not earn an excessive amount is because of the money they bring back into the industry. This is because people en masse follow them, as they bring immense joy and pleasure to the people; thus, whenever there is a concert, a live match and a new movie gets released, people buy tickets, and sponsors earn millions of dollars through them. For example, during the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India, people from all over the world gathered here, and they spent money on hotels, flights and food, generating a lot of income for everyone involved.

On the other hand, engineers should be paid a higher salary. To explain, they are responsible for not only improving the infrastructure of society but also keeping it working flawlessly, and without them, the world, as we know it, would come to a standstill. Another job that deserves salaries from the higher band is in the healthcare sector. These professionals are essential for the proper functioning of society, as they work hard and selflessly to save other people’s lives and often have to sacrifice their own personal and family lives to perform their duties. In India, nurses, for instance, work more than 80 hours a week to take care of sick people and are often paid below the average income of the country, which is not acceptable.

In conclusion, I do not agree with those saying that people who entertain others are paid excessive money because these entertainers make a substantial amount for their endorsers. However, professions such as engineers and healthcare workers should also be given proportionate salaries.
