Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 6 Test 2 General Writing Task 2
It is often argued that daily computer use may have more harmful than beneficial influences on young children. I agree with this statement because it can weaken their eyesight and hinder their face-to-face interaction skills.
The main reason I agree that using computers regularly has more drawbacks for juveniles is because it can negatively impact their range of vision. This is because computer screens emit harmful rays that can weaken a person’s vision if the eyes are exposed to them for a long time each day. Since children’s eyes are more sensitive than adults because of their young age, being exposed to such harmful rays can cause significant and irreparable damage. For example, due to more engagement with computers, both at school and at home, more children have developed vision problems and wear spectacles than in the past.
Another reason to consider is that it can reduce their communication skills. By chatting primarily in front of the screen, young children may become overly reliant on digital communication, limiting their ability to interact in person. This can happen because, during an online chat, they can take time to reply or ignore others, but while talking face-to-face, they need to respond instantly, and this lack of interpersonal skills can create problems in building relationships and understanding social cues. Many adults, for instance, get anxious whenever they are in any social setting and have to communicate with a stranger because they don’t know how to initiate the conversation, as they mostly spend their time talking on computers, even with their friends.
In conclusion, I completely agree that the daily use of computers by young ones can result in more negative outcomes than positive ones because computers can adversely impact minors’ vision and make them socially inept communicators.
