Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 19 Test 1 General Writing Task 2

These days, the number of individuals who go to famous places not to explore them but to get themselves clicked there is increasing. The main reason behind this is the rise of social media culture, and I believe it is not a welcome development because it defeats the purpose of travelling.

The primary cause of the growing number of people visiting popular places only to click their photos at these places is that they want to post them on Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat. They like to do this because most people are now using social media apps, and they like to follow those accounts that post travel photos of well-known places. Therefore, to get their attention and likes on their post, many individuals go to such places only to click and post pictures, even if they have no interest in admiring the beauty or uniqueness of these places. Many travel influencers that post their travel photographs on Instagram, for example, have emerged in the last few years, as people like to see such content, and they have more engagement than other types of influencers.

However, in my opinion, this trend is negative because, due to this, the purpose of visiting such places gets lost. That is to say that people travel to popular buildings, parks or monuments so that they can admire their beauty and feel part of the history of that place, but if they are going to such places with the motive of just clicking their pictures, they will miss out on enjoying those moments. Instead, they just look for the places with the best background views for their photographs and keep looking at the screens to see who liked their photos or commented on them. For instance, many tourists who visit famous history museums or art galleries can often be seen just clicking the shots of themselves in front of artefacts or paintings, without ever looking at the fine craftsmanship or acknowledging the history behind that piece of art, which makes their visit futile.

In conclusion, the trend of people going to popular places to click photographs of them is becoming increasingly common because they want to post that on social media. Nevertheless, I believe this is not an ideal development because people will not be able to experience that place.
