Question: When we meet someone for the first time, we generally decide very quickly what kind of person we think they are and if we like them or not. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words.
Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 18 Test 2 General Writing Task 2
It is seen that people often form an opinion, whether positive or negative, rather quickly about someone, even if they have not met them before. In my opinion, this is not a good approach because first impressions can be misleading and may prevent us from forming meaningful connections.
The main reason why it is harmful to judge someone based on their initial impressions is because these intuitions can often be incorrect. When we meet someone for the first time, people generally try hard to leave a good impression and behave in a way that might not be their true self to impress others, or they may have ulterior motives they want to achieve. Therefore, basing our trust, or lack thereof, just after an initial impression may come back to haunt us, so it is advisable to avoid making relations this way. A candidate, for example, may present themselves as hardworking during an interview, but they may not be like that in real life. Conversely, a hardworking candidate may have social anxiety, so they cannot express themselves, and the company may miss out on hiring a highly suitable applicant.
Another reason to consider is that people may overlook someone with whom they could have bonded. To explain, our first impression of someone is based on our initial expectations, such as how a person looks, their race, gender or what kind of clothes they have worn; however, these are all just superficial characteristics of a person and do not reveal their true personality. If we select people to interact with just based on their appearance, our social circle may be limited, and we might miss out on amazing people who could have made a significant impact on our life, making it more pleasant, memorable, and worthwhile. For instance, if you meet someone at a party for the first time and if they are quiet, you may presume them to be rude or boring, but they might have some of the best stories to tell or advice to give that can change your life.
In conclusion, I would argue that often forming opinions about others in the blink of an eye, even without prior interaction, is not ideal, as first impressions can be deceptive and probably stop us from making invaluable acquaintances.
