Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 14 Test 1 General Writing Task 2
Due to the increasing popularity of online shopping, some people believe that every shop in towns and cities will be shut down one day. This essay totally disagrees with the statement because certain products are best purchased at shops, and many people shop to socialise.
The primary reason why traditional shopping will always be in demand is that many products need physical inspection before being purchased. If a person is going to buy fresh produce, large furniture or a vehicle, they may prefer to visit the actual shop from where they are purchasing that product to ensure the quality and suitability of that product, something that is not possible via online shopping, making such shops indispensable for such individuals. Therefore, traditional shops are not going away anytime soon. For example, although many e-commerce websites, like Amazon and Flipkart, have started offering quick delivery of vegetables and fruits to consumers’ doorsteps, people still prefer to go and pick the food items that seem fresh, and this trend is expected to continue.
The second main reason this essay disagrees with the stance is that many people prefer to shop because it allows them to spend time with people. Many people like shopping with their near and dear ones because, due to the competitive job market and work demands, they are usually busy in their daily lives and do not get enough time to spend with their loved ones. This also gives them a chance to feel part of the community, make new friends and de-stress themselves, which is impossible when shopping online. For instance, in Delhi, many new restaurants have opened in many shopping malls in the last few years, which shows people not only visit them to shop but also to spend quality time with each other and have fun together, and it is likely to increase in the future.
To conclude, although the demand for online shopping has significantly increased, this will not result in the closure of physical stores because onsite shopping allows customers to check the quality and functionality of products before purchase and to socialise.
