Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 11 Test 2 General Writing Task 2

Some argue that more time should be spent teaching students practical skills rather than focusing too much on theoretical facts from elementary to tertiary education. I totally agree with this statement because, with the right balance, students would be better prepared for jobs and develop social skills.

If more time were spent teaching practical skills than now, students might have a better understanding of the real-world workplace. That is to say that although theoretical knowledge acts as a foundation of any successful career, if someone does not know how to actually apply the knowledge in real-time, then they cannot succeed because what we study and how things work are not always the same. Therefore, it becomes essential to equip students with the right amount of both types of knowledge so that they can go far in their careers. Computer Science graduates in India, for example, usually have to undergo on-the-job training because the theories they learn in college do not often hold true in their actual jobs.

Another reason to consider is that learning people skills can help learners build a better future. This is because, in the workplace, most individuals have to work in a team that may have different personalities, and if they do not know how to communicate effectively, manage confrontations and work in a team, they will find themselves in trouble every single time. Since encountering such situations is expected at work, managing them effectively is the key to having a blooming career, so in schools and universities, more focus should be on imparting these abilities. For instance, a vast majority of electrical engineers in India are not taught how to track, detect and fix any electrical circuit or what other problems can arise in the workplace, and hence, their initial few months on the job are really challenging.

In conclusion, I concur that instead of spending too much time on teaching plain facts, more time should be devoted to teaching children practical skills because this will not only better prepare students for professional careers but also facilitate the development of crucial social competencies.
