IELTS Cambridge Book 18 Test 3 GT – Letter

Question –

WRITING TASK 1

You should spend 20 minutes on this task.

You recently bought some train tickets for a journey a week in advance. When you went to the station to catch the train, you were told you could not use the tickets and the staff were very unhelpful to you.

Write a letter to the train company. In your letter:

  • describe the problem you had with the tickets
  • say why you were unhappy with the staff
  • suggest what action the train company should take

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Answer –

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my annoyance with the ticket problem I had to face and the unruly behaviour of your staff members.

The issue I faced with the ticket was that my name on it was misspelt. My name is Bryan, but your employee printed Brian on the ticket. Also, my brother’s last name was not printed on his ticket, and when the security officers cross-checked our tickets with the IDs we used to book them, they kept us from boarding the train. They ruled the tickets invalid, and in all that chaos, we missed our all-important company’s annual meeting.

I was highly disappointed with your staff’s behaviour because they started pushing us when we were just trying to explain the situation to them. In fact, one of the officers tried to tackle me to the ground, and I barely escaped injury. We even requested them to verify that the error was from their end, but instead, they started shouting at us, making us very uncomfortable and shell-shocked.

I would recommend that you take the strictest action possible against the culprits so that other customers do not have to go through the same embarrassment that we underwent. Moreover, as the mistake was on your part, I think you should refund me the amount that I paid for the tickets.

I am looking forward to receiving your response.

Kind regards,

Dwayne Johnson
