WRITING TASK 1

You should spend 20 minutes on this task.

The system used for rubbish/garbage collection in your local area is not working properly. This is causing problems for you and your neighbours.

Write a letter to the local council. In your letter:

  • describe how the rubbish collection system is not working properly
  • explain how this is affecting you and your neighbours
  • suggest what should be done about the problem

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Answer –

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction on behalf of my neighbours with the inept functioning of the rubbish collection service in our area.

The main problem with the service being provided is the infrequent pick-ups. The person in charge of collecting waste from the houses does not come regularly and only comes once or twice a week, which leaves us with no other option but to collect the garbage in our homes until it is picked up. To make matters worse, when he does come to pick up, he litters the road because he has too much litter to collect and not enough space in his trash cart.

This situation is impacting us in the worst way possible as many of us, including me, are suffering from either diarrhoea or whooping cough. Due to being constantly surrounded by trash, we are facing serious health issues, and some of my neighbours have to be admitted to hospital. In addition, the number of mosquitoes has increased significantly, which has led to many cases of dengue fever.

I would recommend that the rubbish should be collected from houses every day so that we can have some respite from the foul smell. Furthermore, the roads should be swept regularly, in fact twice a day if possible, and along with it, pest control needs to be done. As the mosquitoes and houseflies have risen in numbers, we need the help of professionals to terminate them.

I hope that you will address these concerns as soon as possible.

Kind regards,
Johnny Depp
