IELTS Cambridge Book 12 Test 3 GT – Letter

Question –

You should spend 20 minutes on this task.

A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children’s sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.

Write a letter to the company. In your letter,

  • describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
  • summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
  • say how you think the company should spend the money

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Answer –

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give my thoughts on whether your company should invest money in sponsoring a local Under-15 cricket team for a couple of years or arranging two concerts in an open ground.

The main advantage of funding our local youth cricket team is that they can have access to state-of-the-art equipment like cricket bats, leather balls, gloves, pads and other cricket gear; and they can also undergo advanced-level training for two whole years, which would help them to hone their skills. In addition, if any of them goes on to become a marquee name in the future, it will bring fame and glory to your company, too.

However, if you pay for the two open-air musical nights, the main upside is that people across the board can enjoy these events. Since most people are fond of music, it would give them a chance to enjoy it with family and friends, and it will be an unprecedented event, as it will be the very first live music event in our city. Additionally, it can be a golden opportunity for local artists to display their talents in front of a large audience.

Having weighed both options, I am of the opinion that backing our youth in sports is way more advantageous than holding two concerts. This is because this funding might encourage more youth to take part in sports and they could bring glory to the nation if they won international competitions, but spending on the musical nights is a short-term investment that may not bear any fruit for anyone.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,
Morgan Freeman
