Answer of Cambridge Book 8 Test 2 Academic Writing Task 2
Modern advancements have significantly transformed how individuals communicate with one another. The primary effects technology has had on people’s relationships are that intimate relationships have become less meaningful, and people can stay in frequent contact. I believe this should be seen as a disadvantageous development because it has reduced face-to-face interactions, negatively impacting human health.
The principal difference technology has brought in relationships people form is that personal relations have become disposable. Due to the internet, people no longer need to put much effort into finding their partners, as many use dating apps such as Tinder, which offer numerous options, so relationships are not valued as they once were. Another effect is that people can maintain regular contact over long distances. In the past, individuals had to write letters and wait for days or even months to get a reply, limiting communication with loved ones to once or twice a year, but now, they can talk as many times a day as they want. For example, social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat allow people to contact anyone, anywhere and anytime in the world within seconds, either via message or video call.
In my opinion, this new method of conversing should be seen as an unwelcome development because human interaction is essential for a person’s mental well-being. When individuals talk in person, they can easily convey their feelings by using their senses like touch, hearing, and gestures, resulting in a more fulfilling experience and helping them decompress, whereas this is impossible through text. As a result, people feel more relaxed and satisfied after interacting with someone in person. In Corona pandemic, for instance, it was reported that an unusually high number of people fell into depression as the entire world was in lockdown, and nobody was allowed to leave their homes for months.
In conclusion, technological advancements have diminished the significance of even the most sacred relationships despite allowing more frequent connections with loved ones. I argue that this change is proving catastrophic, as young people are facing mental stress due to lessened one-on-one communication.
