Answer of Cambridge Book 19 Test 2 Academic Writing Task 2
The number of working days ought to be fewer than what it is now so that employees could have more days off. I completely agree with this statement because it will improve work-life balance and reduce turnover.
The primary reason for advocating a shorter work week is that it can improve the balance in workers’ lives. With more free time, working people can engage in hobbies or spend time with loved ones, helping them to relax. If they are happy and not stressed, they can put their best efforts into their work, increasing their efficiency and productivity and ultimately benefiting everyone involved. For example, it can be seen that the countries with a 5-day work week usually produce more competent employees and foster more innovation compared to those with a 6-day work week.
Another important consideration is that it can increase employee retention. When workers experience a lighter workload due to fewer working hours, they are less likely to switch companies and more likely to stay with one company longer. This can save companies hundreds of thousands of dollars on recruitment and training, and if the employees know all the ins and outs of the company, it can grow exponentially. Many successful businesses worldwide, for instance, usually have long-term employees who have stayed for over a decade, and these employees said that they did not leave their companies for pastures new because they are content with their jobs.
In conclusion, this essay agrees that the number of days people work should be reduced in favour of longer weekends because it can create work-life harmony and reduce the likelihood of employees quitting their jobs.
