Answer of Cambridge Book 18 Test 4 Academic Writing Task 2
In numerous nations, life expectancy has increased; leading to a debate on whether an ageing population poses challenges for governments or benefits society. Although the drawback of this phenomenon is the financial cost, I believe that the advantages of having an older population completely outweigh the negatives because it can help impart experience to young people.
On the one hand, the primary demerit of an ageing population is the financial strain it puts on governments. That is to say that longer life spans mean extended retirement periods, during which individuals may require financial support from the government. If they experience any age-related illness, this will impact the healthcare system and take up resources that could have been used elsewhere. The UK government, for example, has to allocate a significant portion of its annual budget towards the welfare of people over 60 who lack sufficient financial resources, and for that, they have to cut corners from other areas. However, I believe that the contributions older individuals make to society far exceed these costs, making the benefits more significant.
On the other hand, the chief merit of this situation is the wealth of experience that elderly people possess, which they can transfer to the younger generations. Having encountered and resolved numerous challenges throughout their lives, older people possess valuable expertise and knowledge. If they live longer, they can pass the baton to the next generation by becoming their mentor, accelerating development and economic growth for companies and countries. Companies such as IBM and Intel, for instance, offer mentorship programs and flexible working arrangements to encourage older employees to share their expertise and contribute to the companies’ growth. Since older people can engage in charitable work or care for their grandchildren, allowing both parents to work, this essay thinks that the upsides of an ageing population are substantial.
In conclusion, even though the financial burden on federal authorities is a downside of an ageing population, the knowledge they can share with others is the principal benefit. For these reasons, I believe that the cons are totally outweighed by the pros.
