Answer of Cambridge Book 15 Test 4 Academic Writing Task 2ย ย
In some families, children are raised to believe they can accomplish anything if they try their best. The main benefits of this belief are higher self-esteem and success, while the key drawbacks are stress and unrealistic dreams.
On the one hand, the chief merit of telling juveniles that they can achieve their dreams with hard work is that it helps to build their confidence. This is because when children receive this message consistently, they come to believe in themselves, which can help them tackle challenging tasks they might not have attempted otherwise. Another advantage is the likelihood of becoming successful. When minors are told that hard work is the key to success, they are more likely to persist in pursuing their dreams, even in the face of failure. This perseverance can help them achieve their goals and become successful individuals. For example, many famous entrepreneurs, like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, have credited their success to the perseverance instilled in them during childhood.
On the other hand, the main disadvantage of the notion that success solely depends on hard work is that it can cause strain. Instead of learning and honing new skills and enjoying their childhood, children would spend more time chasing their goals, and with little time to relax, they will feel burnt out. Moreover, they may set unrealistic goals. Children will think that efforts alone can fulfil their dreams, but in reality, other factors also play a role in success. They might start doubting their abilities and self-worth if they fail to achieve their objectives even after working hard. Becoming a professional ballet dancer or basketball player, for instance, requires a particular height and physique, and no amount of hard work can compensate for this.
In conclusion, although the two principal advantages of telling children that they can be anything they set their minds to are that it can foster a sense of self-worth and encourage them to achieve success, the main concerns are tension and self-delusion.
