Answer of Cambridge Book 14 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2
It is often argued that music can be a useful tool for uniting people from various regions and different age groups. I completely disagree with this statement because cultural nuances influence musical preferences, and music preferences often change with age.
The main reason I do not agree that people from different parts of the world can be brought together by music is because of the subtle differences in cultures’ perceptions of music. That is to say that in spite of the same genre of music, people from one country may not appreciate the song from another country probably due to the language or words that are used, as what may seem to be perfectly normal in one culture might be perceived as obscene in another. Therefore, bringing together people with such differences through music becomes almost impossible. For example, in American rap, the usage of abusive language or even sexual language is quite common and is accepted by society, but most Asians do not welcome such kind of words, so they avoid listening to such songs.
Another reason to consider is that different age groups often prefer different tempos and styles of music. As people age, their tastes often change due to life experiences, which often widen their horizons, and they start seeing the world in a new light. As a result, what they enjoyed in their childhood may no longer be their favourite, and what they once disliked may become appealing. Hence, this wide variation in people makes it difficult for different generations to share similar tastes in songs. It has been commonly seen that young people, for instance, mostly listen to EDM or metal, but as they get older, they start liking country songs or ballads that they used to skip as children.
In conclusion, I strongly disagree that music can be used to bring people from different cultural backgrounds and age ranges at one stage because individuals of different cultures like different types of lyrics and musical tastes tend to shift with age.
