Answer of Cambridge Book 12 Test 4 Academic Writing Task 2

Certain people say that permitting children to decide about their daily activities, such as food, clothing, and leisure, can lead to a society of selfish individuals, while others think children must decide about matters related to their daily lives. Although children choosing their preferences can lead to a selfish society because they will not learn to control their impulses, I think that enabling them to make such decisions is more important as it enhances their sense of responsibility.

On the one hand, granting children the freedom to make decisions might prevent them from learning to resist their desires. This is because juveniles could become accustomed to getting their way without considering other’s opinions and needs and could become hard to deal with or reason with. For example, children who grow up without sufficient parental guidance may struggle with teamwork in the workplace as adults because they cannot compromise. However, I believe parents can intervene when their children make poor decisions, but letting them learn from the aftermath of their actions is a better approach.

On the other hand, when children are permitted to make everyday decisions, they can become more responsible adults. They can learn from their mistakes as they get the opportunity to deal with the consequences of their choices. This experience makes them more cautious about their decisions when they age, helping them avoid distractions and focus on important things. To illustrate, many successful entrepreneurs said that being allowed to make decisions related to their lives in childhood made it easier for them to make practical choices during their careers. Since being successful is the ultimate goal of people, in my opinion, developing decision-making skills at an early age is invaluable and preferable.

In conclusion, even though some people believe that allowing children to choose regarding everyday matters could result in a society full of self-centred individuals due to a lack of self-control, this essay argues that children should be permitted to make their own decisions because it fosters a greater sense of responsibility, which would be more beneficial in the long run.
