Answer of Cambridge Book 10 Test 1 Academic Writing Task 2ย ย

Minors must understand what is good and what is bad for them, and some view punishment as an important tool to teach them this distinction. This essay totally agrees with this statement because it will make them aware of the consequences of their choice. However, rather than beating children, parents and teachers should take away something the child values.

Young children must be punished if they step out of line because it will help them understand the aftermath of their behaviour. By doing so, they will become upstanding members of society because if they are not punished for lacking discipline at home in their childhood, it can lead to delinquency later in life. Therefore, to instil morals in juveniles and ensure a peaceful world, punishing them for wrongdoings at an early age is vital. For example, in India, parents usually punish their offspring when they misbehave, and that is why India, despite its population density, has lower crime rates than any developing nation.

Instead of beating children for their mistakes, a better punishment is that parents and teachers should deprive children of something they treasure. When adults do this, it gives children time to reflect on their actions and learn from them without physical abuse. However, if parents or teachers physically or verbally abuse juveniles for every mistake they make, it may lead to increased aggression, antisocial behaviour and mental health issues. Many parents in the USA, for instance, impose curfews on their offspring or stop them from playing with their favourite toy or best friend if they break any rules, and this has proven to be more effective than physical punishment.

In conclusion, I completely agree that discipline via punishment should be introduced early on because it will teach the child that their actions lead to repercussions; nevertheless, this should always be non-violent, and the best way to discipline a child is to deny them something they are deeply attached to.
