Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 18 Test 3 General Writing Task 2

A majority of workers did one job in the past, but the trend has reversed, and an increasing number of people now do two or more jobs simultaneously. The leading causes behind this trend are increasing inflation and the emergence of freelance opportunities. The primary benefits of this are more career options and increased income, while the drawbacks are stress and not having a work-life balance.

The principal reason why people do multiple jobs is that inflation has increased drastically. That is to say that the prices of consumer goods have gone disproportionately up compared to the hikes in income, so to make both ends meet, people work more than one job. Another reason is the rise of the freelance industry. People are getting part-time jobs that they can do from anywhere and at any time, and to make good use of their time, they choose to work such jobs, along with their traditional jobs. Many companies, for example, hire freelance writers and web developers to build their websites or to delegate extra work.

The merit of doing more than one job is that it opens more career opportunities for individuals. If they do different jobs, they can develop a diverse skill set and expand their professional horizons by engaging in various roles. Additionally, people can earn more money. Having more than one income stream can help them reduce financial vulnerability and enhance overall financial stability. For instance, some people work two or sometimes three jobs to pay for their offspring’s college tuition fees.

The chief concern of doing this is that it can stress a person out. This is because juggling multiple jobs reduces a person’s relaxation time, and without the time to unwind, they will feel stressed, burning them out. Moreover, balancing multiple jobs may compromise work-life balance. To explain, to work more jobs, people will have to stay in the workplace longer, and the time they spend with their families will become less and less, affecting their relationships. To cite an example, a common ground for divorce is the lack of attention given by the working spouse to their significant other because they are too busy at work, thus jeopardising their marriage and mental health.

In conclusion, the trend of individuals holding more than one job concurrently is due to increased inflation and freelance options. Although its pros are opportunities for skill development and financial benefits, maintaining stress and work-life balance are challenges it poses.
