Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 11 Test 4 General Writing Task 2

Some often claim that they could find out a lot about a person’s culture and character just by looking at the clothes they wear. I agree that it is somewhat possible because clothes represent individuals’ regional identity and nature.

The primary reason I side with those claiming to recognise a person’s culture by their clothing is that different cultures have different sets of clothing. That is to say that every region has its traditional attire that has evolved and become part of its identity over the centuries, and it encompasses cultural and regional values. Therefore, by looking at a particular piece of clothing, people could determine the place and beliefs that person belongs to and holds. For example, garments like the saree and the kimono are traditionally worn by Indians and the Japanese, respectively, so they can help identify the region of a person’s upbringing.

Another reason to consider is that people often wear what they like. In other words, if someone opts to wear comfortable, casual clothes, they may value practicality and ease, while someone who prefers branded, stylish clothing might be affluent and more into fashion. Their clothes can easily point out this aspect of a person’s personality and social status. Individuals who wear vibrant colours, for instance, are often perceived as extroverts and confident, while those who prefer subtle colours are thought to be reserved or introspective.

In conclusion, this essay completely agrees that clothing could reveal a lot about people’s character and culture, as clothes often reflect cultural identity and mirror the personal traits of those wearing them.
