Question: News stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by pictures. Some people say that these pictures are more effective than words. What is your opinion about this?

Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 11 Test 3 General Writing Task 2
Usually, news reports are published and broadcast along with photographs, and some opine that these images have more impact on the audience than words. However, I believe that both these aspects of reporting are equally important, as while images can catch people’s attention, words are also necessary to convey the context.
On the one hand, pictures can be a great medium to attract the attention of people easily. This is because photos are usually colourful and vibrant; therefore, they can grab a person’s attention seamlessly towards an issue that they might have ignored otherwise. By just having a look at them, people can feel connected with the subject matter as visuals can arise strong emotional responses in individuals, a feat which words alone would struggle to achieve. Mass media, for example, often use images of children in war-torn and famine-hit countries, successfully eliciting strong emotions and leaving a profound impact on the psyche of people.
Similarly, words are essential to deliver the background of a story accurately. When viewed alone, images can sometimes be misleading or misinterpreted, which is where words come into play. A well-written article can explain all the nuances of that situation clearly by providing background information and statistics to support the image. This helps the audience better understand the subject’s severity and complexity in question. For instance, images of a protest may attract attention, but without the article explaining the reasons and people behind the protest and the possible outcome, individuals would not understand the motive and might feel detached from that topic.
In conclusion, I would argue that using both words and photographs to present a story on TV or publish it in a newspaper is equally crucial because images can be easily noticed, and words offer proper perspective so that the news report can have the optimal effect on its readers and viewers.
