Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 8 Test 2 General Writing Task 2
There are some people who opine that it would be more beneficial for boys and girls to be taught in different school buildings, while others argue that there are more benefits for both genders if they study together. Although teaching them separately can allow teachers to cater to specific gender needs, I believe that they should be schooled in the same classroom as it can prepare them for real-world situations.
On the one hand, some say that boys and girls studying separately is a preferable proposition because teachers could tailor their teaching methods accordingly. Many proponents believe that boys’ and girls’ brains function differently, so they have different learning styles and needs, and if they study separately, teachers can teach them in a way that best suits their capabilities, something which is impossible in a mixed-gender classroom. For example, boys learn better in a more active and competitive environment, whereas girls usually thrive in cooperative surroundings. However, I believe that when both sexes study together, they can help each other to understand any topic and reach new heights.
On the other hand, others think that co-education is better as it makes the younger generation ready for the real world. That is to say that both boys and girls will eventually have to interact with each other when they enter college or the workforce. If they deal with each other in their childhood, they will develop mutual respect and understanding of each other’s perspectives, which is crucial for personal and professional relationships. For instance, throughout the world, where boys and girls study together, more working women are satisfied with the attitude of their male counterparts. Since studying together allows one to learn how to communicate with the opposite gender effectively, I believe it to be a more desirable prospect.
In conclusion, even though some claim separating boys and girls at school can help teachers tailor strategies for each gender, I consider it much better if they are taught together because they can learn how to build relationships with the other gender, a valuable trait in the long run.
