Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 7 Test 1 General Writing Task 2

A few people choose to live in a house, whereas others believe living in an apartment has more benefits. Although the drawback of living in a house is that it is costlier than an apartment, I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because people can get privacy in houses.

The principal negative of living in a house rather than an apartment is the expenses involved. That is to say that if someone lives in a home, they are entirely responsible for repairs and any other upkeep associated with the property. They even have to hire security guards for safety purposes, but in apartments, these costs get divided among people living in the condominium, so it only impacts one person’s finances a little. For example, owning or renting a personal house is significantly more expensive than an apartment in my city due to different expenses while maintaining this type of property. Despite this, I believe that the investment potential a house holds can easily overshadow any initial costs, so the pros outnumber the cons.

On the other hand, the chief merit of this phenomenon is the privacy people get in their houses. Houses often come with separate walls, private halls and outdoor spaces such as gardens or yards, but in apartments, people have to share walls and common areas with their neighbours. Individuals can utilise such spaces according to their needs and do not have to get permission from anybody to use their place. Unlike apartments, a house with its own backyard, for instance, can be a great place to hold family gatherings anytime without worrying about others’ schedules. Since their own space can give people peace of mind and a place to relax, I am of the opinion that residing in a house rather than an apartment building has more upsides.

In conclusion, even though the negative aspect of residing in a house compared to an apartment is the cost, the positive is the personal space people can get. Therefore, I believe that any concerns are far outweighed by the benefits.
