Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 5 Test 1 General Writing Task 2

There are some people who believe that minors have too much leisure time at their disposal and should spend it on their schoolwork. In my opinion, a balanced approach should be followed because leisure activities can help foster creativity and provide opportunities for social interactions.

If children spend an adequate amount of time on fun activities, it can boost their imagination. When they play sports, draw or play musical instruments, it allows them to express themselves freely, as they can use their imagination to create something new or think of a new idea. Since there is no burden of scores in these activities, they can explore themselves and learn from their mistakes, and it can also act as a vent to let off steam and help them de-stress. For example, many successful painters have often mentioned that their interest in this field was piqued in their childhood as they had enough time to draw and paint.

Another reason to consider is that free time is crucial for their social development. When children play team sports or do any group activities, they can learn about teamwork, cooperation, and effective communication through interaction with their peers. If children learn these important life skills earlier in life, it will benefit them in the long run when they grow older and enter the workforce. For instance, most high-level positions like CEOs or managers are usually occupied by individuals with excellent people skills rather than the most intelligent beings.

In conclusion, although academics are an important part of children’s lives, I believe that letting them enjoy their free time is equally important because it will help them be more creative and equip them to deal with various social situations.
