Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 3 Test 2 General Writing Task 2

It is commonly accepted that family fabric is weaker than in the past. The primary reasons behind this are busier lifestyles and overindulgence in technology, while the solution can be dedicated family time.

The principal factor behind the changing dynamics of family bonding is that both parents work. That is to say that because of work, both mother and father have to spend a lot of time in their workplace, leaving little to no time for quality family interactions, and as a result, families are getting estranged. Another cause is the excessive use of electronic devices. To explain, children are occupied mainly by social media on their smartphones, even when they are with their parents, rather than having meaningful conversations and creating memories and due to this, they are growing apart from each other. For example, it can be commonly seen in family functions or during family dinners that youngsters are usually busy looking at their phone screens instead of talking to their cousins, uncles or aunts.

However, these issues can be solved if families designate strict time for family only. In other words, parents should schedule a particular period when nobody is allowed to use their mobile phones or other electronic gadgets and strictly pay attention to each other. This would bring them closer, and parents can teach some valuable life lessons to their offspring, listen to their problems and give solutions. More often than not, spending quality time can go a long way in forming close-knit families again. In India, for instance, many people live in joint families, and they usually bond over dinner and talk about their day without any distractions.

In conclusion, the chief reasons relationship bonds in families are weakening are that dual-income households are becoming increasingly common and people are using mobile phones when with family. To address this problem, a particular time, especially for family members, should be allocated.
