Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 19 Test 4 General Writing Task 2

Regardless of where celebrities are, they are clicked by professional photographers. A few people think this is acceptable because the common person is interested in popular people’s lives, while others believe it is unacceptable if photographers follow famous people. Although this practice generates revenue for photographers due to the public’s interest, I believe it is morally wrong because it invades such people’s privacy.

On the one hand, some say that due to people’s curiosity, celebrities being clicked at any place at any time is fair because it is a source of livelihood for photographers. This is because the fans of these celebrities are usually keen to know what they are doing in their private lives or who they are dating, and these fans are ready to pay to get their hands on such news or pictures. For example, magazines that usually print about the private lives of film stars are purchased more than other magazines, thus generating more profits for everyone involved, including photographers. However, I would argue that clicking someone’s private moments can lead to negative consequences for them, and such pictures may become a source of distress.

On the other hand, others are of the view that this behaviour of clicking famous people everywhere is not tolerable because it breaches their privacy. To explain, everyone, including famous people, has the right to keep their private life separate from their professional lives and hidden from the public’s eyes, but if photographers follow them at every step, popular people will not be able to spend quality time with their loved ones, and their private lives would be non-existent. Many celebrities, for instance, have reported being unhappy with paparazzi because they clicked and published their photos when they were spending time with family or friends. Therefore, I think that it is much more important to respect other individuals’ privacy than to earn a few dollars by disturbing them.

In conclusion, even though some consider it okay that photographers click famous people anywhere as it is a source of their income due to the public’s interest, I believe it to be just plain wrong because it interferes with people’s right to privacy.
