Question: Some consumers are increasingly choosing to buy goods that are produced in their local area, rather than imported goods. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative trend?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words.
Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 19 Test 3 General Writing Task 2
A number of end users are now actively opting for locally produced goods over imported ones. The main reasons for this are growing support for local businesses and reasonable pricing. However, I believe it is a negative trend as it will limit people’s options.
The main reason people prefer to buy local products is that they are supporting local businesses more than before. To explain, due to a shift in people’s mindsets, they are choosing to buy local products instead of imported ones because they want to support their people financially. Moreover, regional products are cheaper than imports. This is because when goods are imported, extra taxes are levied on them in the form of import duty, and transportation charges are also added to the cost, but this is not the case with local products. Toyota cars manufactured in India, for example, cost significantly less than those imported from Japan.
In my opinion, this should be seen as an unwelcome development because it would severely make one’s choices. That is to say that not all things can be manufactured in one place or country because different products require different components, and it is impossible to find them all in one place. Therefore, people would have to leave out many options, which may impact their quality of life, and to worsen the situation, it could drive the prices up because the quantity would be limited, and thus, supply will be less than the demand. For instance, Indians like to eat American fruit, avocado, because of its nutritional benefits, but choosing only local products would deprive people of this fruit.
In conclusion, although the principal reasons people are increasingly leaning towards local products are the newfound support for local organisations and the affordable prices of such products, I consider this approach to be negative because it will reduce the size of the pool from which people can purchase what they need.
