Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 17 Test 4 General Writing Task 2

It is argued by some that socialising in the evenings and on the weekends with people they work with is time well spent, while others believe working life and social life should be kept apart. Although socialising with colleagues can help to strengthen the bond, I am of the opinion that it is better to keep both lives separate to have a healthy work-life balance.

On the one hand, some say spending time with co-workers even after office hours is important because it can help to improve relations. To explain, spending time with peers in casual settings may foster stronger connections, as they will understand each other better by sharing their personal experiences and fun moments. This would result in improved collaboration and communication, making teamwork easier. For example, many companies organise small get-togethers often on the weekends so the employees can get to know each other better and be comfortable working in a team. However, I believe this fun time can quickly turn sour if any joke or pun offends the other person.

On the other hand, others argue that keeping social and working life separate is crucial to achieving harmony. That is to say that after working 12 hours a day and five to six days a week, people need time to decompress and relax. To do this, they prefer to do what they like or spend quality time with their family and do not want to worry about work. However, if they spend this time with their colleagues, they will discuss work sooner or later, putting even more stress on them. Thus, it is essential to have some time when people can forget about work and do whatever pleases them. Many workers, for instance, like to go on a picnic or go outdoors to spend time with family or friends and unwind. Since maintaining a balance between work and personal life is pivotal to living a fulfilling life, I would say this is a stronger argument.

In conclusion, even though some say we should spend time with people from our workplace after office because it will help us to gel together, I believe it is better to keep personal and working life at a distance from each other as it is crucial for a person’s well-being.
