WRITING TASK 2: You should spend 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic.
Question: In the future, people may no longer be able to pay for things in shops using cash. All payments may have to be made by card or using phones. Do you think this will happen one day? Why do you think some people might not be happy to give up using cash?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words.
Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 17 Test 1 General Writing Task 2
There is a chance that in the coming years, individuals might not be able to purchase anything they need in cash, and all transactions would be carried out using either credit or debit cards or e-wallets. I do not think that this is a possibility in the future, as people will use technology and cash to pay their bills simultaneously, but not everyone would be in favour of discarding cash because of security concerns.
I believe all payments will not entirely be digitized, and it will be more of a combination of digital payments and cash. That is to say that although the trend of paying through cards or e-wallets will definitely rise, it will not make cash completely obsolete because the internet connection is either not always reliable or cannot reach everywhere. This, coupled with the ever-increasing price of smartphones and internet services, would make it impossible for poor people or the lower-middle class to rely solely on this technology. For example, wealthy people living in metro cities mostly use Google Pay or their credit cards to pay for things, but people residing in villages or remote areas still use cash as a primary mode of payment, and this scenario is likely to continue even in the future.
In my opinion, the security risk involved in using cards or mobile phones to pay may deter some people from not using cash at all. This is because people’s bank accounts are often linked with the internet and their mobile numbers for online banking or payments, and when people swipe their cards or pay through mobile wallets, their information, such as card number or mobile number, gets shared with whom they are paying. Hackers could use this information to withdraw money from a person’s bank account without their knowledge. Therefore, a few people would be more than happy to use cash to pay for small or big purchases to avoid such thefts. In India, for instance, for the past few years, it has been reported that the incidences of money being stolen by hackers from people’s accounts have surged, and such instances may only increase in the future, deterring people from using this technology only.
In conclusion, I think contactless payments and mobile wallets will coexist with cash rather than completely replace it. Some people might be unwilling to stop using cash because of the risk associated with digital money.
