Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 16 Test 3 General Writing Task 2
A few individuals prefer not to live too far from their hometown for a significant proportion of their lives. The causes of this may be the fear of the unknown and the emotional connection with their birthplace. The main benefits of residing in close proximity to their place of birth are family support during difficult times and lower living costs, while the drawbacks can be limited opportunities and dull life.
People spend most of their lives near their birthplace because they are afraid of unfamiliar circumstances. When someone moves to a new place, it can present unknown challenges, and due to this, they prefer the comfort of familiar surroundings. Another reason could be that they are emotionally invested in their hometown. Often, during their childhood, some link fond memories to specific locations in their town, and when they grow up, this connection makes them reluctant to relocate. Many people, for example, support singers, actors and sportspeople from their town because they feel a shared pride in their achievements.
The principal merit of dwelling close to one’s hometown is that individuals can fall back on their families during tough times. If an individual lives near their family members, their family members can reach them in no time if and when they are in trouble. Additionally, people do not have to pay extra costs that come with moving to faraway places. When they move to a new city or country, they will have to pay for accommodation, groceries, and other bills. For instance, many Indians inherit their parents’ home, which reduces their overall cost of living and dissuades them from moving.
However, the chief concern usually accompanies this is the lack of opportunities. Sometimes, hometowns do not give people good career options because they may be underdeveloped, limiting personal and professional growth. Moreover, people may lose their passion for life. To explain, people who spend their entire life near their birthplace will become bored as they do not have anything they have yet to see or do; therefore, this lack of variety can lead to a loss of enthusiasm. For example, elderly people who have never left their hometowns often exhibit a pessimistic attitude towards life in general.
In conclusion, some do not leave their birthplace and settle in other places because they are put off by the risks involved and a strong personal connection to their hometown. Although the positives of this trend are family support and lower living expenses, limited chances for growth and a monotonous life are the significant downsides.
