Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 14 Test 4 General Writing Task 2

Many workers devote themselves to their careers, resulting in reduced leisure time. While the advantage of working longer hours is the potential for career advancement, I believe the disadvantages outweigh the benefits due to its negative impact on health.

The primary benefit for which people work extra hours is to achieve promotions. In most workplaces, employees have to compete with their colleagues, and those who are the most productive and efficient are more likely to be promoted, necessitating additional time at work. For example, multi-billion dollar companies such as Facebook, Tesla and Amazon often promote employees based on their productivity, so to achieve more than the set targets, workers spend more hours at the office to progress in their careers. However, I believe that such promotions are short-lived, as working this way is not sustainable in the long run.

On the downside, working excessively long hours can harm a personโ€™s well-being. If an individual works continuously without adequate time to relax, the stress from work will eventually catch up, negatively affecting both physical and mental health, meaning they will be unable to live fulfilling lives. For instance, many doctors leave the profession before retirement due to the adverse health effects of working more than 90 hours a week. Given the paramount importance of maintaining a healthy body and mind, I believe the disadvantages of working long hours are much more significant.

In conclusion, although the allure of career advancement might tempt individuals to prioritize working extra hours, the chief concern is the heightened risk of poor well-being. For these reasons, I believe the positives are significantly outnumbered by the negatives.
