Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 13 Test 3 General Writing Task 2

Some believe that going to a cinema for movies is redundant these days as we can do so on our smartphones and tablets, while others argue that films are best enjoyed in movie theatres. Although watching films on devices is convenient, I believe that viewing movies at cinemas gives a much more enjoyable experience due to advanced technology.

On the one hand, some say it is unnecessary to go to cinemas to watch movies because watching them on mobile devices is more convenient. Due to the emergence of OTT platforms in recent years, people can watch movies anytime and anywhere without compromising their work schedules. Individuals can also pause any film if they have to do urgent work, or they can re-watch the entire movie or a scene as many times as they wish, which is impossible if they are watching it in a cinema. For example, Disney Plus is a well-known streaming service that allows subscribers to watch various international films whenever they choose throughout their subscription period. However, I believe the small screens of phones and tablets do not give the thrill and experience that the big screens of movie theatres can provide.

On the other hand, others argue that watching films at cinemas is necessary for a more pleasant experience as they have state-of-the-art equipment. This is true because movie theatres are specially equipped with surround sound systems, huge and high-resolution screens for the best visual experience, and comfortable chairs, all of which increase viewers’ enjoyment. Some filmmakers use the latest 3D technology that takes the viewing experience to the next level, and these things cannot be experienced on mobiles at home. For instance, people who watched movies like Avengers and Avatar in IMAX cinemas were taken by surprise due to special 3D screens and goggles that made the graphics surreal and the audience feel like a part of the movie. Since we can thoroughly enjoy films due to the set-up of cinemas, which is not readily available at home, I opine that it is preferable to watch movies at theatres.

To conclude, despite the fact that it is convenient for people to enjoy movies on their devices anytime, I believe that watching movies in cinemas is a better option because they are equipped with the latest technology to enhance the viewing experience.
