Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 12 Test 3 General Writing Task 2

Some individuals believe that children ought to be inspired by their fathers and mothers to spend their spare time participating in organized group activities, while others claim that it is essential for minors to learn how to entertain themselves alone. Although spending time alone can help children become independent, I believe it is more important for children to be involved in team activities as this can teach them teamwork.

On the one hand, some people believe that children can become independent if they spend their time alone instead of participating in group activities. That is to say, when children do activities on their own, they learn to solve problems and spend their time without relying on anyone else. This may help them later in life when they have to figure out things on their own in the workplace and handle difficult situations in their personal lives. For example, the most successful Indian entrepreneurs often say in interviews that they have become successful only because they never relied on anybody, and this habit was instilled early on in them by their parents, who motivated them to do activities independently. However, I think that if they spend too much time on their own, they may become introverts or develop communication problems.

On the other hand, others opine that children must be encouraged to participate in group activities because this helps them learn how to work within a team. This is because when children perform various activities with their peers, they learn to listen to each other’s views, pool their strengths and cooperate with their team to achieve their common goal. For instance, all of my colleagues who were encouraged to participate in team sports during their free time as children are more effective team members than others who were not. Since they will need these skills when they start working in a company or become entrepreneurs, I believe it is more important for children to participate in group activities to develop teamwork abilities.

In conclusion, although some say doing activities alone can teach children how to be self-dependent, I believe that children should be motivated by their parents to participate in group activities as this trains them to work as part of a team.
