Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 12 Test 2 General Writing Task 2
In a lot of nations, more housing is the need of the hour, and the countryside areas are the only option remaining to construct new houses. However, some argue that safeguarding these areas is more important than building new accommodation at those places. I totally agree that new homes should not be built in the countryside because it will destroy not only farming land but also the habitats of wildlife.
One of the reasons preserving the countryside is crucial is because food is grown in only such places. The soil in such areas is fertile as humans have not infiltrated and destroyed these places to build cities or other building projects. If these areas, too, were used to construct human residences, it would destroy the agricultural practices, and we would lose whatever land is left to grow food to feed the human population, making it impossible to meet food demands, and the peril of starvation will loom large. India, for example, due to the expansion of urban cities into countryside areas, has lost a large proportion of its farmland; therefore, now they import pulses to overcome the shortage of local produce.
Another reason to take into account is that such places act as wildlife habitats. That is to say that the countryside is the only place left with natural spots and forests, which serve as home to many wildlife species, be it animals or birds, and destroying these places will be like taking away their homes forcibly and leaving them vulnerable, which could later result in their extinction. Many forest areas have been cleared to build human settlements; further encroachment may mean irreparable damage to the environment that could very well be the end of the human race as well. For instance, many species like dodo and white rhinoceros have disappeared from the face of the earth in the past few decades just because they had nowhere to live because of deforestation.
To conclude, this essay strongly believes that additional housing should not be built in the countryside because this land is used to produce food for people and is home to wild animals.
