Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 12 Test 1 General Writing Task 2
The number of tourists visiting areas with harsh conditions, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic, is increasing these days. The principal pros for those travelling to such areas are that they can learn survival skills and experience something unique, while the primary disadvantages are costly trips and life-threatening conditions at these places.
One of the main benefits associated with travelling to difficult places is that people can learn about survival. As there are limited to no amenities such as hotels and food stores at such places and visitors, too, cannot carry too many supplies, this could teach them how to survive with limited resources in tough conditions, making them strong not only physically but mentally as well. Another advantage is the distinctive experience for travellers. These trips offer an entirely different experience from any other regular trip to any famous city because, nowadays, almost all modern cities worldwide have the same things to offer, like skyscrapers and international food outlets. In the Antarctic or the Arctic, for example, people can see penguins, bears, and whales in their natural habitats that cannot be seen anywhere else.
The chief disadvantage of visiting such remote places with harsh conditions is the exorbitant travel expenses. To go to these places, people have to book special fights, buy special gear and equipment to survive in challenging weather and hire a company to arrange their stay there, which increases the overall cost of these tours, making them too expensive for people. Furthermore, the risk factor increases exponentially when people visit these places. This is because these tourists have to deal with extreme weather, which they do not face in their daily routine, and if they fall ill or get seriously injured, they may not get the medical attention they require straight away, which could result in fatal repercussions. For example, many hikers who visit Mount Everest have died because of avalanches and snowstorms.
In conclusion, travellers learning vital survival skills and having a novel experience are the prime upsides of visiting harsh locations. However, the downsides are the financial burden it imposes and the fact that this hobby is hazardous.
