Question: Employers sometimes ask people applying for jobs for personal information, such as their hobbies and interests, and whether they are married or single. Some people say that this information may be relevant and useful. Others disagree. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words.
Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 11 Test 1 General Writing Task 2
Some individuals believe that employers asking candidates to share their personal details, like hobbies and marital status, may be helpful for them, while others do not share this opinion. Although knowing such information can help managers choose the best candidate, I believe that it would be much better if companies focused on competency instead.
On the one hand, personal information can reveal to companies who the most suitable person for the demands of the job is. This is because if employers know about the applicant’s likes, dislikes, and relationship status, they can choose those who fit perfectly in the job criteria, as some jobs may involve travelling or working irregular hours. For example, in the position of marketing, which requires travelling often to distant places, the person who does not like to travel is not an ideal candidate, and they will resent their job every day. However, I believe that this information may not illustrate how a candidate will actually behave in the field, and a person’s interests usually change with time and age.
On the other hand, others argue that for hiring someone, their proficiency has to be the primary reason. As jobs require candidates to do specific tasks and meet certain expectations, and if they cannot live up to them, their interests and any other hobbies, no matter what they are, will not be able to make up for their lack of skill. For the jobs of doctors, lawyers, and pilots, for instance, the skills and knowledge of aspirants are paramount regardless of their personal beliefs or marital status. Since the capability of the person determines the success of both the company and theirs, I am of the opinion that this point of view is far more potent.
In conclusion, even though some believe that inquiring about personal info could be the optimal way to select the applicant who best suits the needs of a particular job, I consider that irrespective of individual preferences, the candidate must be chosen based on their ability to perform the job.
