Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 10 Test 1 General Writing Task 2

In several nations, the crime rate is on the rise. This essay argues that unemployment and poor ethical values are the primary causes of this phenomenon and suggests that investing in education and raising parental awareness about instilling proper ethics in children from an early age are plausible solutions.

The prime reason for the increasing number of crimes is that many people do not find employment. As the cost of living is significantly increasing, many struggle to make ends meet with their unemployment allowance, so some of the unemployed commit crimes in search of money. Additionally, criminals often exhibit low moral standards. As children, they did not get adequate parental guidance, which would have taught them to be law-abiding citizens, and as a result, they often get involved in illegal activities. For example, most women who want to climb the corporate ladder leave their children with teenage babysitters who are not mature enough to instil good moral values; therefore, some of these children turn to criminal activities as adults.

The most viable solution to unemployment is for the government to invest money to enhance the education system. That is to say that allocating more funds to educational institutions ensures that even poor students can get the required qualifications so they can find jobs quickly after graduation. Furthermore, parents should be made aware of the importance of passing down moral values to their children. When parents are committed to raising their children to be well-behaved, this will help produce upstanding citizens who are less likely to engage in criminal activities, ultimately lowering crime rates. For instance, India has seen fewer young offenders after introducing obligatory ethics courses for new parents.

In conclusion, the principal factors due to which the crime rate is increasing are unemployed people and a lack of moral education. However, to address these issues, governments should invest money in the education sector and tell parents to teach moral values to their offspring.
