Dear _________,
Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 3 Test 1 General Writing Task 1
Dear Mr. Gable,
I am writing to inform you that, due to unforeseen circumstances, I cannot start my new job on the due date.
I, Bruce Lee, successfully cleared my interview and secured a position as an electrical engineer at your esteemed company last Saturday; before this, I spent three years working at ABC Logistics. I received my offer letter on the same day, and according to that, I was scheduled to start this coming Monday, 14th June, but I am afraid I will not be able to do so.
The reason behind this is that yesterday, my grandmother suddenly collapsed and was unresponsive, so she had to be rushed to the hospital. Upon our arrival, the doctor diagnosed her with a heart attack and recommended an immediate operation. Moreover, my parents have gone to Canada for the holidays, so I am the only one available to care for her and cannot leave her.
I can start working after a week, on 21st June, because my parents are coming to India on 19th June. Although my parents had booked the tickets as soon as they got the news, due to too much crowd, the earliest tickets they got were after 4 days. Therefore, after handing over my responsibilities to them, I can join the job peacefully and give my best.
I hope you will understand my situation and allow me the extension I need.
Kind regards,
Bruce Lee
