IELTS Cambridge Book 19 Test 3 AC – Task 1

WRITING TASK 1

You should spend 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and making comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The image displays the process by which ethanol, a type of a biofuel, is made.

Overall, it can be seen that it is a 10-stage, man-made, cyclical process. It begins with plants and tress absorbing energy from the atmosphere to grow and culminates with the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from different vehicles that run on ethanol.

The process begins when plants and trees absorb sunlight and carbon dioxide from the environment as their source of energy to grow, and after they are fully grown, some of them are harvested mechanically. Once harvested, they are sent for pre-processing process, where they are shredded into cellulose in a machine.

Following that, the cellulose undergoes processing, where they are treated chemically in labs so that sugars from them can be extracted before adding microbes to it, and as a result, ethanol, a renewable source of energy, is obtained. This fuel, made from biomass, is used to operate cars, trucks and planes, and when these vehicles are used, they burn ethanol and expel carbon dioxide, which gets added into the atmosphere, which in turn is used again by plants and trees as a source of their energy and the cycle continues.
