Answer –

The two plans compare the redevelopment of a floor of a central library in the present to that of two decades ago.

Overall, the Central Library has witnessed a significant transformation from having sections mainly dedicated to reading to having multipurpose sections and some customer-facing facilities. Another notable change is the addition of a computer room.

Upon entering the library, tables and chairs in the aisle have been removed, and now this area acts as a free walkway. To the right of the entrance was a dedicated section for enquiries such as asking for tickets and returning borrowed books, but it has given way to a cafe. Continuing past the cafe, the area meant for adults to read non-fiction books has been changed into an area that accommodates self-service machines, an information desk and adult fiction books. Moving further, the part of the library used to keep children’s books has been converted into a lecture room.

Focusing on the left side of the entrance, the room where people read newspapers and magazines has been turned into a computer room. At the same time, the section for adult fiction books has not only been shrunk but now also houses all reference books instead. Moving ahead to the end of the passage, the area was used as a storage area for keeping CDs, videos and computer games; however, it has now been expanded and has become a multipurpose room that includes children’s fiction books, hosts storytelling events and has sofas to sit on.
