Question: Every year several languages die out. Some people think this is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your experience. You should write at least 250 words.

Answer of Cambridge Book 9 Test 4 Academic Writing Task 2  

A number of languages are becoming extinct each year, and a few believe that preserving them is unnecessary as fewer languages mean life will be less complicated. I totally disagree with this statement because it would lead to the loss of cultural diversity and valuable knowledge.

The main reason I disagree that a lower number of languages would simplify life is because the world will become monotonous. Languages breed diversity because, with a particular language, a culture’s traditions, beliefs, history and folklore are connected. If languages disappear, so will these cultural distinctions, making everything uniform and boring. As a result, people will refrain from travelling to different places or countries, as there will be nothing new to experience, which will be detrimental to the economies of the countries that depend on tourism. For example, many Britishers come to India during the festive season to experience its rich culture and heritage rather than going to other European countries with similar cultures and landscapes.

Another reason to consider is humanity’s loss of accumulated knowledge when losing any language. To explain, communities living in a particular area for thousands of years acquire intricate knowledge about its ecosystem, medicinal plants and other valuable resources. This invaluable ecological wisdom that could be used to save or serve humanity will be lost if it is not passed down to the next generation just because there is no one to speak that language. Many ancient scriptures, for instance, remain unread because these languages are not in use anymore, depriving humans of potentially crucial knowledge.

In conclusion, I completely disagree with the opinion that the declining number of languages means a more leisurely life because it would create homogeneity, which would be boring and result in the loss of critical knowledge.
