Answer of Cambridge Book 9 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2

Some believe that expanding the number of sports amenities is the most effective way to make people fitter, while others think that this will not have much impact on people’s fitness and that some other methods are needed. Although increasing such facilities will make them more accessible, I believe that providing education about health is more beneficial to making individuals fit.

On the one hand, if there were more sports centres, people would easily have access to them. Many people do not go to any sports club or gym just because there is no such place nearby, and they have to travel a long distance to use one, making it impossible for them to go there daily. For example, the nearest park is 5 kilometres away from the area where I live, and many people in my neighbourhood say that if there were a park in our society, they would go there every day, but now they cannot as it is too far. However, I would argue that people who lack the motivation to exercise will not go anywhere, even if such facilities are opened next door.

On the other hand, others argue that a more efficient method is to educate people regarding their health. Governments can run awareness campaigns to spread knowledge about the benefits of a healthy diet and the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle and fast food. As most men and women are still unaware of the damage they unconsciously do to their bodies, warning them about the ill effects of such habits can be a better motivation factor. The Indian government, for instance, runs ad campaigns about the risk factors, like cancer, associated with consuming alcohol and tobacco, leading to a sharp decline in their users. Therefore, I agree with this viewpoint since visuals have a much more profound effect on human senses.

In conclusion, even though some say opening more sports complexes is the optimal way to make people healthier because of increased accessibility, I consider that making people aware is much better as it can motivate individuals to take the necessary steps to be healthy.
