Answer of Cambridge Book 9 Test 1 Academic Writing Task 2

Some experts say that the best time to introduce a second language to children is at primary school instead of secondary school. Although the main drawback is that it might overwhelm students, I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because early introduction could enable children to achieve greater fluency.

The concern of adding a foreign language at primary school is that it can exacerbate academic pressure. Young learners already have many core subjects to study; if an extra subject is added to their curriculum, they will need to spend more time studying. Consequently, this can lead to stress and burnout. For example, in Indian primary schools, students forced to learn English as a second language do not perform as well in other subjects like science and mathematics as those who do not study this extra subject. However, I believe this problem can be overcome by teaching a foreign language with the help of fun activities, such as games, songs, and multimedia resources.

The chief benefit of inculcating a new language in elementary school is that children can become more fluent if they start learning it earlier. By doing so, students can develop a solid foundation and get proper knowledge of the basics of a foreign language, including grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Therefore, these students are able to master that language as they have more time to put these things into practice than peers who start at high school. Indian students who start learning English at primary schools, for instance, articulate their views more eloquently than those students who start later at secondary schools. Since learning a second language, especially English, can open new doors for them, I consider this phenomenon to have more advantages.

In conclusion, even though children may initially get stressed if a new language is added to their curriculum at primary school, the principal merit is that children can speak a foreign language more easily. For these reasons, I believe that the cons are outweighed by the pros.
